How do chefs make a living from the catering and cooking business?

There is plenty of money to be made in the chef industry. Of course, much of this depends on the area, and the type of establishment that you work in.

Naturally a busier area will bring in pretty good money. The best places to work in are expensive hotels and restaurants. Is being a chef right for me?

Here is a quick breakdown of the money that you can make that depends on your position.

Head chefs and cooks: You can make anywhere from R51.73-R159.39 hourly to start.

To be more specific; if you are working in recreation services you can make R122.50 an hour; hotels and motels are R105.46 per hour, and eating and drinking places around R77.21 an hour to start.

Restaurant cooks: You can make anywhere from R58.31-R94.01 an hour to start. What do I have to do to be a chef?

If you work in recreational services you can make R65.55 and hour, hotels and motels; R69.79 hourly; eating and drinking places; R57.57 hourly to start. Qualifications & Advancement

Short order cooks: You can make anywhere from R44.24-R94.01 hourly to start.

If you work in Hotels and Motels; R59.08, recreation services and other miscellaneous places; R55.58, eating and drinking places; R52.99, Gas stations etc; R58.09, and grocery stores; R46.02 hourly to start. Trade or Vocational Schools, On-Site Training, Online Training

Cafeteria Cooks: you can make anywhere from R46.9-R87.71 hourly to start.

In schools you can make R53.55; Nursing homes; R59.5; Hospitals R65.59; child care services R52.64 hourly to start.

Please Note that these are the starting hourly rates for the cook that is trying to get their experience. Naturally your pay will increase as your experience grows.
